Fleetwood Mac’s Five-Year Run on Rock Around The World
Few bands had a longer relationship with Rock Around The World than Fleetwood Mac — the band appeared across five separate broadcasts spanning more than three years, tracking their transformation from a respected but modest-selling group into one of the biggest acts in the world.
Early Days
Fleetwood Mac’s first RATW appearance came on Show #26 (February 2, 1975), sharing the broadcast with Renaissance, Jeff Beck, and The Who — a crowded bill typical of RATW’s early format, which often packed several acts into a single hour-long show.
By that November, the band had earned a full solo interview segment: Show #67 (November 16, 1975) paired a Fleetwood Mac interview with Wigwam and Peter Green — notably, Green being the band’s own former guitarist and founding member, whose post-Mac solo career RATW covered right alongside his old bandmates.
Their Own Newspaper Issue
Fleetwood Mac’s growing stature earned them Issue #5 of the RATW newspaper, a dedicated feature titled “The Mac: Having It Their Way” that ran across two full pages — a rare honor at a time when the band was still building toward the Rumours-era fame that would soon make them superstars.
The Bicentennial Show
By 1978, that fame was fully realized. Fleetwood Mac headlined Show #200 (June 4, 1978) — RATW’s landmark Bicentennial Show, a special “Best Of Live” broadcast pulling together the biggest live performances from the show’s history, with Fleetwood Mac sharing the marquee alongside Jimmy Buffett, ELO, Supertramp, and Tom Petty.
